Police Representative Forum Announcement

Dear neighbors,

South Lakeview Neighbors will hold a forum for the 19th District Police Representative candidates on February 14 in person.  Please see below for the information.

WHAT:  Candidates Forum for 3 new positions for 19th POLICE DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE in the Feb 28 Municipal Election.

WHEN:  Tuesday, February 14, 7 PM to 8:30 PM (doors open 6:15 PM), ATHENAEUM CENTER, 2936 N. Southport, Lakeview. (cash bar)

WHO:  South Lakeview Neighbors, 32nd Ward and 19th Police District residents (Lawrence to Fullerton, Lake edge to Chicago River).

WHY:  In July 2021, the City Council passed a new ordinance for police oversite, accountability and public safety creating elected three-person District Councils for each of the 22 district commands to
improve policing and public safety.  This is accomplished by monthly input meetings, community collaboration and policy proposals.  As part of their duties, they will also nominate candidates to serve on the new city-wide Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA) which will have power to advance systematic reform, select new policy supt. candidates and create Police General
Orders. (Muni code of Chicago, 2-80-070)

There are 6 candidates vying for 3 new open elected positions which will be on the February 28 ballot.  This is a low key, but important campaign overshadowed by the mayoral election.  Generally, the public
knows very little about these candidates and they vary considerably in their stances, views and beliefs regarding policing.  For you to make an informed voting decision, each candidate will speak uninterrupted and then take questions.

The candidates are:  Maurilio Garcia, Julia Kaviar, Demerike Palecek, Dan Richman, Jenny Schafer, and Sam Schoenberg.
